Great screwdriver with nice bag March 5, 2010 Y. Wang (Salt Lake City, UT USA) I usually like to use the quality tools such like the logitech mouse, the great screen, and tools like Victory knife, etc. Because I think the better tools not only benefit your work but also give me a great mood, which could give a kind of smooth life. So when I get this great and smart screwdriver with a solid and great bag, it's really a surprise. So this is really a good product, maybe not good enough for professor, but it definitely great enough for the normal guy like me. I would recommend it to friends and I just put it by my hand.
Nifty! February 21, 2010 K. McAllister (Tehachapi, CA USA) I have to say that when I ordered this, I thought that it looked "cutesy" and wondered about how useful it would be. It's awesome! I ride a motorcycle and I have used it for small repairs--using bits that I would have a hard time finding while rummaging through the toolbox...I have used it for home repairs, too--it's got every bit I can imagine and they are all organized and easy to access.
It is very easy to use, very convenient, and compact so it fits in the ever full junk drawer.
(And yes, it's cute, too.)
Nice set to keep handy February 18, 2010 FlamingoNut (NJ) With all of my miscellaneous tools unorganized & dumped in a toolbox, this is a nice set that's easy to keep together in one place and handy in an emergency. The bits are on the cheap side, but this shouldn't deter one from purchasing this set. It was especially nice to have the necessary bits already loaded one day when I was taking down old blind brackets. There were two different screws and I needed different bits, and the autoloader made it painless to switch on the fly, rather than get off my little ladder and sift through the toolbox. I haven't needed to use the flashlight, but for testing purposes I gave it a try. It was cute, but for some reason I found it awkward and it kind of got in my way when switching bits. Needing some light and not having to switch bits might be a plus in the long run; I'll have to test further.
Brilliant idea, a few issues with implementation - I still like it February 10, 2010 A. Dent (Minas Anor, GD) The Autoloader is close to 'the best' anyone who does not consider him/herself a 'professional' can hope for when it comes to screwdriver convenience. Yet, there are quite a few frustrating issues that should make the buying decision more difficult than it should be and I will discuss them below.
Briefly, with the Autoloader you get 2 quite decent screwdrivers - not the best but definitely 'decent', one that works with 1" bits, called 'classic' and a smaller 'precision' screwdriver using 5/32" bits. Each comes with 6 bits already loaded and there are additional bits on the side for a total of 48. In addition, there is a 3-LED 'UFO' light that can be attached to either screwdriver to provide light when operating in dark areas. All comes inside a zippered nylon case (blue or pink).
I will begin with the 'specs', followed by my 'bad' observations which will be followed by the 'good' section, followed by my own, subjective evaluation.
WHAT YOU GET (in detail)
- Zippered nylon case
- 3-LED 'UFO' tool light
- 6-in-1 Classic Autoloading Screwdriver with the following loaded bits:
-- Slotted 1/8", 3/16", 1/4"
-- Phillips: PH1, PH2, PH3
- 6-in-1 Precision Autoloading Screwdriver with the following loaded bits:
-- Slotted: 5/32", 1/8", 3/32"
-- Phillips: PH0, PH00, PH000
- All 1" bits:
-- Phillips: PH0, PH1, PH2, PH3
-- Robertson (square): R1, R2, R3
-- Slotted: 1/4", 3/16", 1/8"
-- Hex: H3/16", H5/32", H9/64", H1/8", H7/64", H3/32", H5/64"
-- Torx: T40, T30, T27, T25, T20, T15, T10
- All 5/32" bits:
-- Phillips: PH1, PH0, PH00, PH000
-- Slotted: 5/32", 1/8", 5/64", 1/16"
-- Robertson (square): R1, R0
-- Torx: T8, T6
THE BAD
- Hard plastic packaging makes it hard to extract contents. Seriously, be careful or the sharp plastic edges may hurt you as you cut it open.
- The hard foam that holds the screwdrivers and the bits is so tight, it can be difficult to take the screwdrivers out, especially the small one.
- In fact, the small screwdriver being placed so close to the extra bits, you MUST be careful when taking it out or the bits will hurt you.
- The extra bits are held so tight by the foam base, you can't always get them out with you bare fingers - consider a plier but be careful because some of the smaller ones could break.
- No documentation on how to replaced the UFO's battery.
THE GOOD
- 48 bits - this is a lot. I'm not a heavy user but, so far, I couldn't find one screw this set could not handle and I can't think of one other than maybe the near-microscopic ones you find in eyeglasses.
- The case - this is a big plus, keeping everything together and, I must admit, this was the main selling point for me. We have probably a dozen or more different screwdrivers of various kinds around but we can never find the right one when we need it.
- The six-bit loader, of course. The 12 most used bits are preloaded and it's really easy to replace a bit with something else when you need it - simply pull out the existing one and push in the replacement and that's it (they are magnetic).
- The bit changing process. It takes a little practice but, once you get used to it, you can switch to one of the loaded 6 bits in seconds: pull back the handle, rotate it until the arrow points to the bit you want to use, push forward and you're done.
- The UFO light CAN come handy. It's easy to turn on, attach it to the screwdriver of make it stick to some base near your work area for as long as it's metal - it has a magnetic base.
- Solid build - it seems unlikely to break for as long as you don't apply some excessive torque.
EVALUATION
The primary function for this set is that of not being lost. With everything I need, as far as screwdrivers go, in one place, we should no longer waste valuable time looking for the right screwdriver in some of the more unlikely places when we need one. The case is large enough and visible enough (blue or pink stripes) to be easy to spot. As I stated already, I am happy with the build quality and I expect this set to last for many years if not abused.
All the shortcomings I noted above notwithstanding, I still like this set and I am happy I ordered it - see my comment to this review for some more detail.
